About Us

Family-Run Kennel in Frederick, Maryland

Welcome to Stone Manor Kennel, a family owned and operated business for 40 over years. Complete pet care is provided on a daily basis for dogs and cats.

Mission Statement:

Our objective is to make the pet boarding experience for both the owner and the pet feel as comfortable as possible.

History: The owners, Sharon and Barry Farmer welcome clients year-round and service remains consistent year after year. Clients, as well as pets don't like surprises, so over the years, the business has remained steady with generations of families entrusting us with their generations of pets.

In 1974 I, Barry Farmer, established Stone Manor Kennel boarding dogs and cats. The core facility had previously been operated as a poodle breeding facility. The experience gained in boarding thousands of pets and a multitude of different breeds has led to an evolution of the facility and the management of our guests over the past 35 years. At that time I had a pre-med degree from Memphis State University, two years of experience in the Veterinarian Corp of the U.S. Army and three years of experience in animal research for a private laboratory.

In 1978 Sharon E. Farmer joined the operation and while working for the General Accounting Office as an auditor, she soon developed a very active pet grooming business. After our daughter, Christina, was born, her nanny with her 6 year old daughter, Michelle, lived in the apartment over the kennel and also helped in the kennel business. That relationship lasted for over nine years.

The kennel business had grown to the point that we could board as many as 70 pets during holidays and the vacation season but it became apparent that to care for that number of clients, employees were necessary. We made a business decision that in order to give our boarders a more personal and consistent experience, we restricted the number of boarding clients to an amount Sharon and I could care for ourselves.

Over the years, we have appreciated the relationship that has developed with our clients and their "four legged friends.” We soon learned that families board their pets when their children are young, the children will take care of the pets when they no longer want to vacation with their parents, and we will see the parents again when the children have left home. We value this relationship and are now boarding the pets of the children and in some cases the grandchildren.

People:
The office displays a lifetime of our personal pets and our family is shown growing and developing through the years. Upon entering the office, clients and pets are greeted by the same people every time. Staff includes: Sharon and Barry Farmer, and our daughter Christina.
